Tropical North Queensland is a vast region stretching from reefs and islands, through to beach and coastal wetlands to mountains, tablelands and Gulf Savannah grassland. The major centre is Cairns, a tropical town with irresistible markets and shopping arcades.
Cairns City -
Cairns is an ideal base for exploring and enjoying the rich, varied pleasures of this region. There is a variety of Cairns city accommodation, including apartments, hotels and resorts. The Cairns International Airport, a short ride from the Cairns city centre, acts as a gateway to the Cairns region and a primary access point to the Great Barrier Reef.
The Cairns Esplanade is a major focal point of the city, and invites you to stroll, fly a kite, relax on the grass under a shady tree, or share a barbecue or picnic with friends. The large sandy swimming lagoon is open for free public use between 6am and 10pm daily. While Cairns does not have a swimming beach, there are beaches north of the city and each day, over 600 sea, air and land tours depart from Cairns.
Much of the holiday accommodation in Cairns is close to shops, restaurants, theatres, galleries, nightclubs, the glass-domed Casino and the Cairns Convention Centre. Cairns city shops and duty free stores are well stocked with souvenirs and luxury goods from top Australian and overseas designers.
