Visitors to the Townsville region will be unable to forget the beautifully warm days, with
the sun shining brightly on the calm blue sea. With over 300 days of sunshine each year,
visitors can truly enjoy the stunning natural beauty, rich history and fabulous man-made
attractions that await them in this region.
Townsville is easy to get to, the city's airport is serviced by all
major domestic airlines and is located 7 kms from the city centre.
Couples, families and people of all ages will enjoy the many activities
and attractions of this region, whether they are seeking peaceful relaxation or something
more adventurous.
The region extends from Townsville, south to Bowen and north to Mission
Beach. Townsville is the centre of the North Queensland region and has a relaxed charm
that belies its lively and dynamic nature.
Townsville has theatres, cinemas, restaurants and nightclubs. Flinders
Street East is the hub of nightlife - have a quiet chat in a wine bar or listen to live
bands. Palmer Street offers a myriad of fine dining. For non-stop action Jupiters
Townsville Hotel & Casino is an excitement centre.
The Strand is Townsville's newest playground. This seaside promenade
has restaurants, cafes, coffee shops and bars. While away the hours over tropical seafood
or relax over a cup of coffee and soak up the atmosphere. From the broad sandy you can
enjoy the views to Magnetic Island.
For an aquatic adventure visit reefHQ and the Museum of Tropical
Queensland. Or… visit one of the most unspoilt sections of the Great Barrier Reef -
Kelso Reef just off Townsville and Magnetic Island.
The reef teems with life - it's the richest marine habitat on earth and
this region has some of the best diving locations including the wreck of the SS Yongala.
Accommodation in Townsville ranges from guest houses, B&B's to
international hotels - choices range from five star luxury to motels, family resorts -
many with spectacular ocean and city views.
Magnetic Island is just 20 minutes from Townsville by ferry, crossing calm Cleveland Bay.
Magnetic Island has an abundance of outdoor activities. Jet-ski around
the island, sail or hire a canoe, snorkel over coral reefs or go parasailing. The Country
Club also boasts a golf course. In August, the protected waters become the winter
playground of humpback whales.
This the only island on the north coast to combine a national park with
a permanent residency of about 2,000 people. "Maggie" affects a quaint sense of
community, typified by Friday night films screened under the stars and charity cane toad
races at the local pub.
You'll find all the modern conveniences - shops, supermarkets, buses,
taxis, boutiques, restaurants, cafes, bars and nightclubs, on this island.
Magnetic Island is spectacular and diverse - it's great for any kind of
holiday with accommodation ranging from moderate family and resort style accommodation,
many of which are fully self-contained.
